In this post I want to talk about mini cuts, what they are and how you should use them.
What is a mini cut?
A mini cut is basically just a short and aggressive period of time during your gaining phase (bulk) where you try to quickly lose some fat before you get back in a caloric surplus.
The point of this is so to be able to be in a caloric surplus for the majority of the year without putting on to much fat.
By strategically doing one or two mini cuts during your gaining phase you are going to be able to spend more time in a caloric surplus, and sustain more muscle throughout the year since your main cut won’t be as long.
How to do a mini cut?
When you’re doing a mini cut it’s all about getting in and out as fast as possible, you don’t want to spent more time in a deficit than necessary.
A mini cut should be more aggressive than a regular cut because you want to get rid of a lot of fat in a very short period of time. To do this you want to quickly drop down to a caloric deficit of around 6-800 calories for 3-4 weeks. I would not recommend going much lower on the calories or doing it for more than 3-4 weeks since you just want to lose fat, not muscle. You might also want to do some light cardio during this period.
Also pay attention to your compound lifts in the gym, if your strength is going down you might want to increase your calories or cut back on the cardio a little bit.
During these 3-4 weeks you want to focus on keeping your strength, not gaining strength. If you are restricting your calories drastically while working out to heavy you might end up doing more damage than good.
When to do a mini cut?
This really depends on personal preference, some people feel comfortable carrying more body fat than others. Personally I use them right before a period where I know I’m going to be eating more, like Christmas, or if I’m going to travel somewhere maybe.
Make sure your not overdoing them, if you do mini cuts to often you kind of miss out on the point of being more in a surplus.
Other then that you have to decide for yourself when you feel uncomfortable about the amount of fat you are putting on. But remember, mini cuts are not supposed to get you shredded they are simply a tool to help you stay a little leaner throughout the year and make you main cutting period shorter.
